An interview a day in May – Part IV

Here comes another one. This time it’s Susan Knights – a fellow Etsy photographer….

1. Where in the world are you?

Northern and Southern Ohio, USA.  I say both because my husband and I have our primary home in Northern Ohio, and we also have a farm in Southern Ohio.  I get to see the best of both top and bottom and in between of this beautiful state whenever we travel back and forth.  And it’s not called “Beautiful Ohio” for nothing!

2. What was the last thing you photographed and can we see it?

The exterior of my high school alma mater.  I’m doing the photography for another school alum who lives in New York City who is designing the booklet for our ??th class reunion and needed the photos.

You can actually see one of the 120 photos I took on my Etsy site now:

http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=24658716

3. What’s your favourite item in your shop and why?

  The “Blissful Barn” photo: (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=24589807)

I like the perspective looking up and the clean lines and shapes… it really makes me say “Ahhhh” and feel relaxed.

4. Why photography? Why not another “art”?

I’ve dabbled with photography for years and years, and I enjoy looking through the lens and using my eye to crop and set up a shot.  This is especially satisfying with digital cameras because I can take hundreds of shots with slight variations, then decide which one reflects what I actually saw and felt when I took it, and what I want the viewer to see.

5. What would you like to photograph if you could choose anything, anyone, anywhere?

I was just talking about this:  One day, I would love to go to Yellowknife in the Northwest Territory of Canada and capture the Northern Lights.

 —–
4 interviews down – only another 20 or so to go. I just need to find 20 more people!

Interview a day in May…round 3

Here’s the third of my interviews, I am quite getting the hang of this now.

This time it’s another photographer and this one is Jennifer Moore.

Here come the questions….

1. Where do you live?

I live in Montgomery Village, MD.  It’s about 40 minutes from Washington, DC.

2. Show us your favourite photo and explain why you like it

This is a “happy” photo, and it was taken at a very happy time in my life.  My boyfriend and I were traveling in celebration of our 6-month anniversary.  It was a very nice weekend.  Here it is, two years later, and we are as happy as ever!  I also just really love the colors.  The chairs look so inviting.

 3. Where’s the best place on Earth you have ever taken a photo?

So far, Maryland’s Eastern Shore.  I grew up in Maryland, and the Eastern Shore is a very special place, and in my opinion, underappreciated.  I never realized how much I enjoyed nautical photography until I started taking nautical photos in 2007.

4. What would you really like to photograph?

I’m very interested in fashion photography and in fashion in general.  I wanted to be a model when I was younger. Nowadays, I subscribe to a couple of fashion magazines, not just because I love the clothes and the stories, but for the photography.  I love fashion photography done well.  I would want to take a few classes before I attempted it, however.

5. What sort of camera do you use?

I recently upgraded to a Nikon D-60.  My earlier photos, believe it or not, have been taken with a Canon Powershot.  It’s an excellent camera, but now that I am offering my services as a photographer, I wanted something with more capabilities/expandability.  I’m very happy with it, and I’m learning it quickly.

Jennifer also wanted to say thatIn addition to photography, I am a writer/editor and a mixed media artist/crafter.  All of my shops can be seen via my blog at http://dragnrags.blogspot.com

All done! Painless as usual.

An Interview a day in May – Part 2

Here’s the scond of my “Interview a day in May” features – I wonder if I can do this every day for the rest of the month….
This time it’s Lauren Beacham a fellow photographer from Etsy – Here’s a link to her shop
Here come the questions….
1. Where are you sat, right now?
on my butt, in front of a window facing my backyard.
2. If you had to pick one photo out of all of the ones you are selling, which is your favourite and why?
At the moment, I’d have to say my Red Windmill Polaroid Transfer Original .

I think it gives the Moulin Rouge a romantic quality that it is legendary for, but really does not possess in real life.  It lends itself to a great vintage feel that can really be experienced well through polaroid lifts and transfers.  Plus, I think as a transfer, this is one of the best ones I’ve ever done in 6 years.
3. Where’s the weirdest place you have taken a photograph?
hmm…I’d probably have to say the public restroom in the Louvre in paris…but unfortunately I accidentally deleted it.
4. What’s the last movie you watched?
Spinal Tap
5. What type of camera do you use?
Typically a Polaroid 680 SLR or sx-70, but I also love my Nikon N80 35mm for slides and Pentax ist ds for digital.  I also play around with other vintage and toy cameras but none of my work has used them seriously yet.

That wasn’t too bad was it? Lauren also has a Flickr page – here

An interview a day in May – Part 1: Michael Garbutt

I have decided to interview fellow photographers and artists from Etsy.com and Folksy.com. Rather than be all “me, me, me” for a change! Hopefully in return they will mention this blog to their friends, so I do get something out of the arrangement.

First up is Michael Garbutt from all the way down under in Sydney. He’s a photographer who, like me, sells he wares on Etsy.com – you can see his work here: Michael Garbutt Exotic Photography

So here are the 5 random questions I posed and his replies:

1. Where do you live?

I live in Sydney, Australia

(That one was too easy)

2. Out of all your photos, which is your favourite and why?

Tough question. I love them all dearly, but if I have to pick one it might be Marrakech Back Alley: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=24237984 - it really typifies the exotic sort of photos that I love to shoot.

3. Where is the most interesting place you have taken photographs?

I’ve been fortunate enough to shoot in all sorts of wonderful places. I have to go with Petra in Jordan, though. That’s the place they shot the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and it was recently voted as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. It’s truly amazing, photos don’t do it justice and you could spend a week exploring everything it has to offer.

4. Do you do this full-time or do you have a 9-5 job?

Neither, actually! I’m a full time student studying to be an English teacher. I sell my prints in an effort to raise money for new camera equipment and to travel, and it’s working out pretty well so far.

5. If money was no object, where on the planet would you like to visit?

Iceland, closely followed by Easter Island. They both seem to be such photogenic places and I really want to get in on the action. It’s just a matter of deciding between ice and volcanoes, or enormous stoneheads.

That wasn’t too bas was it? I could be an interviewer on TV, there’s nothing to it. Here’s another of Michael’s shots, this one is my favourite from his Etsy shop:

More interviews to come soon (the requests are flooding in!)

Added a shop to my website

Now you can “cut out the middle-man” and buy from me directly at www.dan-jackson.com

My shop at www.dan-jackson.com

My shop at www.dan-jackson.com

I thought this was an easier option for people who perhaps didn’t want to have to navigate Etsy.com or Folksy. This way, they can buy  directly from me using PayPals VERY easy to set up checkout system.

Now I just need to direct traffic to my website…

Coming soon….a shop

I am in the process of creating some “shop” pages on my website.  So instead of forcing visitors to go to Folksy or Etsy, anyone can buy one of my prints from www.dan-jackson.com

I installed some free software called “ZenCart” but it was the ugliest mess I have ever seen, so I threw it in the virtual bin.

That means that I have to design the software myself using HTML, beer, music and inspiration. It will be “powered” by PayPal for payments as that seems the easiest thing to do. If I want to use credit card payments direc tto my site it would appear that I have to sell my soul to the devil and fork out some money.

As I have neither a soul or spare money, I am doing the cheap and cheerful option.

More to come soon…..

(apologies, this is decidedly dull blog update, I’ll try to rectify that tomorrow with something more interesting.)

I’m on top of the (Google) world!

Type in “dan jackson” on Google. Go on.

See who the first result is?

Me on Google, right at the top

Me on Google, right at the top

That’s no mean feat. It’s taken about 4 months of trial and error, but there I am. Right at the bastard top! The very first result.

Our trip to Scotland

We just spent a week in the absolute arse-end of nowhere in Scotland. 8 hours drive to a place called Elphin in Sutherland, 500 miles from Warrington and REALLY in the middle of nowhere. About 20 minutes from the nearest town.

It was brilliant. No people, no traffic, no towns, empty roads and plenty of fields and mountains for Casper to run up and down.

Here’s the cottage we stayed in:

The Cottage in Scotland

And to give you an idea of just how remote we were, here’s a shot of the stars at night. Absolute no light polution from towns and cities so you could literally see thousands of stars on a clear night

Stars. Many of them

There are loads of photos here: www.dan-jackson.com/scotland

I am lazy (first of a few new posts)

I haven’t posted for ages because I have been on holiday, working hard and am lazy. Mainly the laziness. Firstly, we went to Scotland (more on that later) so that meant i neglected this place for a while, but that’s just an excuse I am using.

In my last post I told you all how I got mentioned on the Collings & Herrin Podcast. Well we went to see Richard Herring live in Warrington. It was great and we got to meet him at the end and I had my photo taken with him.

That’s a rubbish story.

Anyway, here’s me and Richard
